What is Shea Butter made from? And what is Shea butter good for? Glad you asked…..

30 Mar

Shea butter is made from the nuts of a tree called the Shea-Karite tree that grows exclusively in Africa.  Who knew right? I didn’t. The tree produces nuts after about 15 years.  Isn’t that just crazy 15 years for a nut?

It could however take up to 30 years (whew!) for one tree to produce a quality yield. The fatty acids in the nuts are what give Shea Butter its healing properties.  It is a far superior butter than say Cocoa Butter, because of the unique fatty acid properties. Well, if it could take up to 30 years….No wonder its healing properties are better than Cocoa Butter.

Now that you know where it comes from let me tell you what it’s good for. Ready?

  1. Shea Butter is Great for any type of Dry skin. It doesn’t matter if it’s your scalp or your feet. Any part of your skin will love Shea Butter!
  2. Stretch marks
  3. Minor Burns including sunburn
  4. Eczema
  5. Any kind of itchy skin (which is probably just Dry skin)

So, basically Shea butter is great for any kind of skin problem.  It’s like the cure –all! I have to admit I love adding to my soap recipes just for the things I mentioned above. There is a real difference using Shea Butter……..

Can’t find a Cold Process All Natural SEA SOAP recipe? Well, try this one!

26 Mar

It took lots of trial and error but I think I finally came up with a really great Sea Soap recipe. Feel free to try this one out. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  If you have been looking around for unique all-natural cold process soap this is for you!

Make sure you read Lye Safety.  Remember —Safety always comes first!

***Always run recipes through a LYE Calculator***

The Ingredients:

Distilled Water 415 grams

Lye  161 grams

Olive Oil 544 grams

Coconut Oil 244 grams

Palm Oil 244 grams

Palm Kernel Oil 75 grams

Avocado Oil 28 grams

½ ounce Sea Clay

1 ½ ounces Dead Sea Salt

½ ounce Kelp Powder

Prepare the lye Solution and set aside to cool.

Note:  I usually like to dissolve the Dead Sea Salt into the Lye solution — Although, I didn’t with this batch and you can tell by the photo (look below)  because you can see the actual Dead Sea Salt…

Then melt the Coconut, Palm and Palm Kernel Oils.  Add the Olive oil and Avocado oils to the melted oils.

I usually take some of the oil out (maybe 2 to 3 tbsps) so I can mix the sea clay and the kelp powder. Then I add that mixture back to the oils.

Now, I take the lye mixture and add it to the oils. Make sure you come to a true trace before putting it into the mold.

Leave it in the mold for 10 to 12 hours. Un-mold and this is what it should look like.

***Important LYE Safety*** Read this before attempting Cold Process Soap!

23 Mar

Are you new to the Cold Process Soap Making world?

Then I would suggest first you read either Smart Soapmaking by Anne Watson or The Everything Soap Making Book by Alicia Grasso.

Okay, so why is Lye safety important? Well how important are your eyes or skin? Lye is extremely corrosive. Years ago —I’m not sure if it still in use now—but people used to clean out clogged drains with Lye……That is how powerful this chemical is.

Lye is activated by water. Meaning it’s a dry chemical but once water hits it. It changes and starts to heat up. Water could mean sweat, humid day any type of moisture in the air…. This is why when you work with Lye you have to be extremely careful.

Safety Goggles, Long Sleeves, Long Pants & Chemical Resistant Gloves are ALL a MUST! No exceptions!

—Make sure you have Poison Control ph# handy.

***For a poison emergency in the U.S. call 1-800-222-1222****

—If you somehow ingest this chemical DO NOT Induce vomiting. Instead drink water and CALL 911.

—If you accidentally get some into your eyes…If you wear contacts get them out of your eyes and immediately start rinsing your eyes with water… Get Medical treatment!

Never use Aluminum with Lye as it will eat right through it. Instead use STAINLESS STEEL or PLASTIC that can withstand HIGH HEAT!

If you have any questions, please contact me!

Okay, I know I said I’d post the pic the next day…..But, better last than never!

Can you Make a Soap Band using Microsoft Word?

9 Mar

Well, this week I was on a search.  What kind of search, you ask? O’ a search to find out how to make a soap band using Microsoft word…Not Microsoft  publisher just good ole’ word. To tell you the truth it was not as easy as I thought it would be…..

I searched and searched and searched… all over the internet. Trying to find out the easiest way to make a soap band using Microsoft word. Am I the only one who doesn’t know how to make a soap band with Microsoft Word? Maybe I am. I’m not as savvy as I’d like to be with computer programs…..

I actually thought I was loosing my mind. I kept thinking to myself everyone makes these soap bands. How hard can it be?  Why? Am I having sooooooo much trouble.

Okay, so halfway through the week…..I had someone show me. Dah! Is all I can say. It is super simple and I can’t believe I didn’t know how to do it to begin with.

But, If you are like me pulling your hair out. Stop right now and keep reading……..

Okay, first things first.

1. Open a New Word Document.

2. Go to the Page Layout Button and hit Orientation and switch to Landscape.

3. Then Go to Margins – Then scroll to the bottom and hit Custom Margins.

4. Set margins (you can set these to what you want) this is what I did…
Top 3”
Bottom 1”
Left .63
Right .63

5. Find the Insert button and click on it.
6. Then click on table. Then click on insert table. Then you’ll need to put how many rows and columns. This is what I used….

Row 1
Columns 5

Then click ok.

Now, you are set to type your info that you want on your label. You can copy and paste on each column.

Then print!

How easy is that? If you have any questions feel free to give me a shout! I’ll see if I can help……..
