The beginning of the Farmers Market has begun. It’s a brand new year and this year we’re decided to do two markets. The Boonton Farmers Market – every Sat between 8:30 & 2 and the Pequannock Farmers Market – every Thursday between 2 & 7. It’s already been a lot of fun. I Love when customers come right up to the table look around and say ” okay, what’s new?” It just makes my day……

But, not only have the Farmers Markets opened but The Daily Record (local newspaper) did an awesome article about my journey  and my soaps! If you want to know why and how my business happened,   You can see the article here.

Are there Any Chemicals in my soaps?

21 Mar

I have two different answers for that question.

yes no

Both answers, really?

Yes! Both….

For years I was making Natural Soap for myself and family. It was a need to end DRY SKIN. I wasn’t making it to avoid chemicals. My goal at the time (for me and my family) was to get DETERGENTS off  our Skin and it worked

No More Dry Skin!

While doing it I accumulated an abundance of soaps.  (I’ve been making handcrafted soaps for 6/7 years.)

Last year (2012),

I started selling my soaps at the local Farmers Market.

I would tell customers that I use Fragrance Oil and FDA Approved Coloring….No one seemed to mind. I answered lots questions and it got me thinking. That’s when I took the plunge (although, not as big as I would have liked) and made  a few batches of ALL – NATURAL soaps.

I made a sign specially for the tray they were on….Saying “ALL NATURAL Soaps” and had an arrow pointing to them. I had many, many, many customers ask what are these? I would tell them, those are my ALL NATURAL soaps that I use Essential Oils (plant based not manufactured)and I use natural coloring like Paprika instead of FDA approved coloring. Out of say 100 customers maybe 1 possibly 2 wanted the ALL NATURAL Soaps.

With that being said I have added ALL Natural Soaps to my ETSY store. This is just the beginning…..More to come!

Here is the link to my ALL Natural Soaps on ETSY.

Okay, so let me get back to the question. Are there any chemicals in my soaps?

No – There are None in my ALL NATURAL  and Unscented No Color Selections.

YES – There are in every other soap I make. Since Fragrance is a chemical and some of the colorings I use too.

It’s ALL about CHOICES!

Soaps that will be featured at Savannah Hope Vintage!

7 Jan

As the New year starts taking off. Thought I’d hurry up and post some of my ALL Natural soaps.

By ALL Natural I mean the scent is natural and the coloring is natural. I myself prefer other ways of scenting soap and coloring it via fragrance oil & colorings (like mica’s). I can be a lot more creative and make Happier Looking soap.

This past spring, summer & fall at the Boonton Farmers market I did a test. What I found was truly amazing. You know how people say you eat with your eyes first? Well, it seems to be the same with soap. I had a fairly large tray with my ALL Naturals and I even put a large sign saying that tray was ALL Natural.

My customers & potential customers would ask about the tray. (at the time there was  no price difference) you know what? Every single customer & potential customer veered away from that tray. They went to the soaps that made them HAPPY!

Which makes me Happy!

I will at one point work on the ALL Naturals but for me right now Ah….I’m not in a rush. But, I did make some for

Do you Need Lye to Make Soap?

20 Jul

Happy Friday!

First let me say. This is Last day to receive 25% off your entire order at:

P.S. I Love Soap Co or My Etsy Shop

Okay now that I’ve said that I Hope everyone’s had a Great week.

So one of the questions I get asked at the Boonton Farmers’ Market is:

“Do you need LYE to make Soap ?”

LYE also called (Sodium Hydroxide)

If you don’t know what Lye (also called Sodium Hydroxide) is,  it’s a caustic substance. Years ago it was used as a Drain Cleaner. When it’s dry there’s no problem. But, if it comes in contact with the tiniest bit of moisture (humid days and lye don’t mix since the lye will attract the water) it gets very Hot.  How hot? Hot enough that if it comes in contact with your skin you can get Burned.

(This is why Soap Makers wear Protective eye-wear, gloves and long sleeves).

What most people don’t realize about soap is  it’s the  product of a chemical reaction.

At the Farmers’ market, I had an older gentleman customer. He said he used to make soap many years ago.  He the gave me  the Best description of Making Soap.

This is what he told me.

You take 2 separate substances combine them together and you end up producing a 3rd substance which would be soap…..

This was the Best description of Soap Making I’ve ever heard!

Do you Need Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) to make soap? the answer is “YES” you need lye to make soap. There are however less dangerous ways to make soap. You could buy a melt & pour base or use a pre-made base.
