Happy November 1st!

1 Nov

I just can not believe how time fly’s!

FLY

I’ve been extremely busy with the soap business and my personal life. And I just realized at this very moment (well, probably  ten minutes ago) that it’s November 1st! It’s November 1st and I haven’t written a post in like forever.

So I started thinking what could I share with you that would be a wealth of information.  AND Boom I remembered reading this awesome blog post about *ORGANIC and what that means written by The Sirona Springs Blog. You can read the post here. You need to go and read this post! Ruth Esteves really tells you everything you need to know when it comes to ORGANIC and soap products! She is the owner of Sirona Springs onlne and the co-owner of The Nova studio where she gets to teach what she loves to do.

Anyway, I hope you do go and read her post about what ORGANIC really means!

Huh, What is Kokum Butter?

17 May

hahaha, Glad you asked. I love use using Kokum Butter (pronounced Coke-um) in everything to soaps to lip balms. But what is it? Well, It comes from the Garcinia Indica tree (that’s the botanical name) and it’s from the St. John’s Wort family. But, I like to just call it the Kokum Butter Tree. LoL

kokum14

It’s  a tree that grows in the Western Ghats region of India.   The tree grows with dense glossy green leaves and produces fruits that look like small plums that are a brownish color.  Under the brownish skin is juicy white fruit with approximately  6 to 8 seeds. Supposedly, the fruit tastes yummy however I’ve never tried it so I have no clue how it tastes.

The Kokum Butter is made from the seeds of the fruit. The butter consists of up to 80% of triglycerides. Which is said to help prevent drying skin. And from what I’ve seen it certainly does. It’s one of my favorite “ALL Time” butters to use.

Soon you’ll be able to check  out our soaps with Kokum Butter here!

Sometimes, it happens!

This past weekend we were vendors at River Jam. It’s a festival that’s packed with 2 stages, 16 bands, food, beer, wine, and lots of crafters.  It’s a really great event especially if there’s good weather which it was! Couldn’t have asked for a better day.

We set up our booth and decided to take our normal stroll around to look at what the other vendors were selling. Then came back and sat until it was time to sell.

Right off the bat,

Boom….

We sold 5 bars of Clouds In the Sky!Clouds in the sky2a

I was thrilled because I LOVE this bar. I know how happy people are going to be with them. I’m not sure if they’re going to use them OR put them on a shelf to look at. I know that they all found great homes. 🙂

Anyway,

I’ve been making soap for over 8 years and every now and then I loose my mind. I had a potential customer come to the table and ask if I add Lauric Acid to my soaps? and I said “No.” Because I don’t……

She said ” Oh, not a problem, not a lot of soap people add it to the soap” and I was like okay….

When she walked away I started thinking that really All of my soaps have Lauric Acid in them. And I should have told her that… Dah….

You want to know what it is too, right?

What is Lauric Acid?

Lauric Acid is an unusual fatty acid that have saturation and a low Molecular weight. (Usually to create a hard, bar of soap you need a High Molecular) The exception to that rule are the oils listed below.  What does it mean to have saturation and a Low Molecular weight? It means it produces a hard bar of soap with great lather. These are some of the oils that are high in Lauric Acid.

Are there Any Chemicals in my soaps?

21 Mar

I have two different answers for that question.

yes no

Both answers, really?

Yes! Both….

For years I was making Natural Soap for myself and family. It was a need to end DRY SKIN. I wasn’t making it to avoid chemicals. My goal at the time (for me and my family) was to get DETERGENTS off  our Skin and it worked

No More Dry Skin!

While doing it I accumulated an abundance of soaps.  (I’ve been making handcrafted soaps for 6/7 years.)

Last year (2012),

I started selling my soaps at the local Farmers Market.

IMG_2917

I would tell customers that I use Fragrance Oil and FDA Approved Coloring….No one seemed to mind. I answered lots questions and it got me thinking. That’s when I took the plunge (although, not as big as I would have liked) and made  a few batches of ALL – NATURAL soaps.

I made a sign specially for the tray they were on….Saying “ALL NATURAL Soaps” and had an arrow pointing to them. I had many, many, many customers ask what are these? I would tell them, those are my ALL NATURAL soaps that I use Essential Oils (plant based not manufactured)and I use natural coloring like Paprika instead of FDA approved coloring. Out of say 100 customers maybe 1 possibly 2 wanted the ALL NATURAL Soaps.

With that being said I have added ALL Natural Soaps to my ETSY store. This is just the beginning…..More to come!

Here is the link to my ALL Natural Soaps on ETSY.

Okay, so let me get back to the question. Are there any chemicals in my soaps?

Answers:

No – There are None in my ALL NATURAL  and Unscented No Color Selections.

But

YES – There are in every other soap I make. Since Fragrance is a chemical and some of the colorings I use too.

It’s ALL about CHOICES!

Woo Hoo! It’s Friday..Time for an update and lessons learned!

22 Feb

First, I want to say Hello!

It’s been a very long few weeks.

I’ve learned a lot about who I am and what my product represents. I have also learned (and if you make a product and sell it please read this) that when you make and package a product the way you  want  (your vision)  don’t let anyone change your vision.

The past few weeks have been a huge learning lesson that I will never forget.

Here’s the story…..(names have been changed for privacy)

A shop owner named Lucy wanted “my soap” in her store for a year or so.  Let me back up a minute. Approximately, one year ago I heard of a charity run event that Lucy does to raise money for  the Leukemia Foundation. At the same time I read somewhere that she also raises money from products she sells. I had a light-bulb moment! to give her soap to raise money for her charity. So, I called her and made arrangements to drop off some soap. She couldn’t believe there was a soap-maker in town. She kept saying how she loved the way the soap looks ….BlaBlaBla.

Then when I started selling at the Farmers market she would come by and say she needs to get my soap in her store. I had always been against it because she doesn’t like the plastic sleeve that I put around the soap. She would rather have it wrapped in paper (which is fine it’s just not my vision.) I like my soaps wrapped the way I wrap them. She also wanted ALL – NATURAL meaning colorant, essential oils not fragrance oils. I can deal with that, it’s no big deal. I do carry ALL – NATURAL SOAPS…..

I did go against my own thoughts, ideas and way I want  to represent P.S. I Love Soap Co. AND wrapped the soaps the way she wanted them wrapped.

(JUST so I could have my soaps in her store for one month)

Stupid mistake! BIG MISTAKE! Will NEVER Happen Again!! EVER!!!

It took me much longer to package. It killed me that I was covering up my beautiful soaps ~ my feel good feeling was gone by wrapping them the way she wanted..

It took me much longer to do inventory because I had to pick every single bar up to see the label to know what kind of soap.

Here’s the BEST part

……when I dropped off the soap, after ALL of the time I spent on it packaging it. I could tell she wasn’t thrilled and she was saying that I could have left the sides open. Yes, I could have done a lot of things…….(like wrapped them the way I always do)

I told her my customers don’t have a problem with my packaging and I’ve sold thousands of bars w/ no complaints!

The BOTTOM LINE is:

Lucy wanted “my customers” to go into her store. She thought by having my soap in her store she could gain clients. Unfortunately, I’m not proud of the way she wanted the bars wrapped. When I’m not proud of something it’s hard for me to try and sell something to someone if it’s (pardon my french) crap.

The real bottom line is:…..Lucy wanted her own soap.

I should have sold her the soap and then “she” could have packaged it any way she felt it should be packaged.

It was like she kept saying she likes McDonald’s Hamburgers

and

then described a square  hamburger which we all know is Wendy’s

….

This is the way she likes the soap wrapped…

Soap1

AND

this is the way I like to Represent P.S. I Love Soap Co.

Soap 2

There is a HUGE difference!

I like to have people see what they are buying and to have a FEEL GOOD Feeling!  However, I’m am a bit of a germaphobe so I have to wrap the soap. Because I don’t want everyone’s fingers ALL over it! the plastic sleeve works…

Sorry, for the long post I have been extremely frustrated as I’ve gone against everything

P.S. I Love Soap Co. stands for….:)

It’s the start of a new WEEK!

11 Feb

I have a packed day ahead.

Lots of *Gonzo Pimple* soap  to be made along with my ever popular *CALLUS Remover* Soap. Plus, my creative juices started to flow again. I have a lot of new ideas that I hope will translate into some awesome looking soap. My fingers are crossed. As every Soap maker knows sometimes things just don’t happen the way you’d like them too……But I’ll keep my faith.

I’m hoping to post a New Recipe for ALL of my followers that love my recipes. Be on the look out. So with all that I said here are some new soap pics.

This soap I call the UPSIDE DOWN SOAP being that there are designs on both the up & down sides….

Upside down soap....This is Upside.

Upside down soap….This is Upside.

and This is the down Side but it still has a design on it!
