Whew…It’s Friday eve day!

17 Oct

This week flew by! I mean it really flew by. I’ve been so busy trying to get holiday soaps made for ALL the events we’ll be doing. The festivities start next week with this…..

Sounds like fun huh? This is also the Kickoff to the Boonton Holiday Boutique! (which is across the street) The Holiday Boutique will be open for 2 months as a consignment store (for us)

Needless, to say I’m not sure how our soap will be displayed and I’m not sure how much to stock the store with. This is completely uncharted territory for us.

In the meantime we also have 2 other smaller craft shows and then our big one at the Gingerbread Wonderland, which we did last year. It’s for 2 FULL weekends.

I’m am SUPER SUPER excited!

Whew!!! So much going on and so this was my short break…But I also wanted to share my new soaps! and if you by some chance would like a bar email us at psilovesoapco@gmail.com

Dove really Irritates me!

8 May

Not this poor little Dove…

Dove as in Moisturizing bars (so they say)

A few weeks ago (maybe a little longer) I saw an AD for Dove is went something like this:

SOAP Strips your Skin DOVE is different.

There are NOT many things in this world that really get under my skin.

I have to admit this got under my skin. Not at first because when I originally saw it  I said “well isn’t that the biggest lie” and then I forgot about it.

That is until I saw it on Good Ole’ Facebook. Someone had taken a picture of a bus that had Dove’s advertising  on it.

Most SOAPMAKERS (like me) steer away from adding detergents to our soaps. Detergents dry your skin. Dove uses detergents and then they add some oils to it to make you believe it’s going to help your dry skin. I can not tell you how many customers have told me that our soaps are so much better than Dove.

Alabu Skincare has a Great article  that Explains Dove Ingredients you can read it here.

Are there Any Chemicals in my soaps?

21 Mar

I have two different answers for that question.

yes no

Both answers, really?

Yes! Both….

For years I was making Natural Soap for myself and family. It was a need to end DRY SKIN. I wasn’t making it to avoid chemicals. My goal at the time (for me and my family) was to get DETERGENTS off  our Skin and it worked

No More Dry Skin!

While doing it I accumulated an abundance of soaps.  (I’ve been making handcrafted soaps for 6/7 years.)

Last year (2012),

I started selling my soaps at the local Farmers Market.

I would tell customers that I use Fragrance Oil and FDA Approved Coloring….No one seemed to mind. I answered lots questions and it got me thinking. That’s when I took the plunge (although, not as big as I would have liked) and made  a few batches of ALL – NATURAL soaps.

I made a sign specially for the tray they were on….Saying “ALL NATURAL Soaps” and had an arrow pointing to them. I had many, many, many customers ask what are these? I would tell them, those are my ALL NATURAL soaps that I use Essential Oils (plant based not manufactured)and I use natural coloring like Paprika instead of FDA approved coloring. Out of say 100 customers maybe 1 possibly 2 wanted the ALL NATURAL Soaps.

With that being said I have added ALL Natural Soaps to my ETSY store. This is just the beginning…..More to come!

Here is the link to my ALL Natural Soaps on ETSY.

Okay, so let me get back to the question. Are there any chemicals in my soaps?

No – There are None in my ALL NATURAL  and Unscented No Color Selections.

YES – There are in every other soap I make. Since Fragrance is a chemical and some of the colorings I use too.

It’s ALL about CHOICES!

11 Feb

I have a packed day ahead.

Lots of *Gonzo Pimple* soap  to be made along with my ever popular *CALLUS Remover* Soap. Plus, my creative juices started to flow again. I have a lot of new ideas that I hope will translate into some awesome looking soap. My fingers are crossed. As every Soap maker knows sometimes things just don’t happen the way you’d like them too……But I’ll keep my faith.

I’m hoping to post a New Recipe for ALL of my followers that love my recipes. Be on the look out. So with all that I said here are some new soap pics.

This soap I call the UPSIDE DOWN SOAP being that there are designs on both the up & down sides….

Color Soap naturally, with what?

27 Jul

I know most people don’t think about how soap is colored. But, if you’re a soap maker (like me) you have to think of these things. Some people want naturally colored soaps and some people don’t care. Eye appeal comes from the colors of the soap. We all know how important Eye Appeal is with food well, it’s the same with soap.

I figured I’d go over some of the natural colorants that can be used.

My “All–Natural” bars of soap are just that “All-Natural” which includes the colorings too. (I have an example at the bottom of this post where I used paprika).. Here are some of the natural colorants that can be used to color soap. I’m sure you have some of them in your cabinets right now.

Always try and do a Test prior to using it in an entire batch. Take lots notes let me repeat Take Lots of Notes. As with anything in Soap Making “Notes” are important. With Ground spices and herbs I start with about ½ Tablespoon per pound of soap – depending on the recipe I’m using. You don’t want to add too much or certain ground spices or herbs can make for scratchy bathing. That’s not something I think most people like. So, when experimenting w/ natural colorings hold off adding too much to the soap. Here’s my list of Naturals…….

***Sometimes steeping is better than just adding a powder to the soap. Experiment and have fun trying new ways to color****

Alkanet – steep in oil – dark purple to muted blue

Allspice – Brown

Annatto Seed – steep in oil first – yellow orange

Bentonite clay – off white to a light ivory-green

Calendula Petals – yellow

Carrots – pale yellow to pale orange

Chamomile – Steep first yellow to beige

Chili – Orange

Cinnamon – Light Brown (be very careful with this one can be irritating)

Clove – Brown

Cocoa powder– brown

Coffee – light brown to black

Curry – Yellow

Kelp, seaweed – green (not too much or the soap will smell like the ocean)

Madder root – pinky red – purple

Nutmeg – Brown

Paprika – Orange

Pumice (finely ground) – grey (Don’t forget this is stone be careful)

Ground Rose-hip – light tan to deep brown (not too much of this one or can be scratchy)

Rosemary – Green

Saffron – yellow

Spinach – light green

Turmeric – Yellow

Here’s my example of a Naturally Paprika Colored Soap! Beautiful isn’t it?
